Sen. Mitch McConnell Remains Hospitalized Following Release of EMS Audio Detailing Emergency Response

Senator Mitch McConnell remains in the hospital as he continues his recovery, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Republican confirmed in a statement on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14, 2026, though his office has still not publicly disclosed the exact cause of his admission.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital," his spokesperson said. "The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”

The update from the former GOP leader's office follows the recent release of an emergency medical services (EMS) audio recording published by an independent journalist. The recording indicates that emergency responders were dispatched to McConnell's Washington, D.C., home for an "unconscious" person on June 14—the same day he was initially hospitalized.

In the audio log, a dispatcher characterizes the emergency call as a “cardiac arrest,” and a paramedic can be heard stating that “CPR in progress.” While McConnell’s name is never explicitly mentioned in the audio recording, the address that paramedics responded to is known to be his residence. When asked directly about the audio this week, a spokesperson for McConnell did not confirm or deny the details but stated they would keep reporters updated on his condition.

McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, has dealt with several health issues over the last few years:

• March 2023: Suffered a concussion and broken ribs after a fall.

• Mid-2023: Froze midsentence during a televised news conference, which followed two other unpublicized falls earlier that same year.

Despite his prolonged hospital stay, colleagues note that the senator remains active behind the scenes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told CNN that he spoke with the Kentucky Republican after his hospitalization and noted that he "sounded good."

"He wants to be back, but I’ll defer to his staff on when," Thune stated, adding that McConnell is "clearly dialed into what’s going on."
