Extreme Heat Disrupts Fourth of July Celebrations Across the East Coast

A dangerous heat wave is disrupting Fourth of July celebrations across the eastern United States, bringing record-breaking temperatures, travel delays and changes to major holiday events.

According to CNN Newsource, at least 20 locations tied or broke daily temperature records Thursday as a powerful heat dome settled over the Northeast. Several East Coast cities, including New York and Newark, recorded temperatures hotter than Phoenix.

In Washington, D.C., organizers temporarily closed the Great American State Fair on the National Mall Friday because of the extreme heat, with plans to reopen at 5 p.m. The city's annual Capitol Fourth concert is still scheduled to take place, although officials are urging attendees to bring plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Philadelphia canceled its annual Independence Day parade because of the dangerous conditions, while several surrounding communities also called off Fourth of July events. Organizers have added cooling tents, hydration stations and air-conditioned buses at some celebrations that are continuing.

The heat is also affecting transportation. Amtrak has canceled more than two dozen trains in the Northeast because of heat-related track conditions, impacting service between major cities including Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Delta Air Lines has also issued a high heat advisory for New York's LaGuardia Airport.

Utility companies are closely monitoring electricity demand as millions rely on air conditioning. Energy officials have taken steps to reduce strain on the power grid, while some local governments are asking residents to conserve electricity during peak demand.

Forecasters warn that temperatures will remain dangerously high through the holiday weekend, with heat index values exceeding 110 degrees in some locations. Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and never leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles.
