Heat Alters Washington's America 250 Celebration as President Trump Plans Holiday Events
Final preparations are underway for one of the nation's largest America 250 celebrations, but extreme heat is forcing organizers to adjust plans in the nation's capital.
Officials with the Freedom 250 "Salute to America" celebration have delayed Saturday's start time from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as temperatures are expected to climb into the triple digits across Washington, D.C.
During a recent rehearsal, a portion of the event's stage set fell near performers, creating a tense moment. Organizers say no one was injured and preparations have continued.
President Trump is still expected to deliver remarks on the National Mall despite the forecast. Speaking about the expected heat, the president said he plans to proceed with the event and joked that he intends to deliver a lengthy speech despite temperatures expected to reach approximately 107 degrees.
Security measures are also visible around the National Mall as crews prepare for one of the nation's largest fireworks displays. Fencing surrounds the Reflecting Pool, which recently underwent a more than $14 million renovation before making headlines again following an algae bloom.
Meanwhile, former U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn has been indicted on a federal felony charge alleging destruction of property in connection with damage to the Reflecting Pool. His attorney has denied the allegations, calling them "outrageous" and maintaining Hearn's innocence.
As part of the Independence Day schedule, President Trump is also expected to travel to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where Fourth of July celebrations are planned at the iconic national monument.
