Morocco Advances to World Cup Quarterfinals with 3-0 Victory Over Canada
Morocco is headed to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-host Canada 3-0 on Saturday in Houston.
The Atlas Lions became the tournament's first team to advance to the final eight, using a dominant second-half performance to pull away after Canada controlled much of the opening half.
Canada created several early scoring opportunities, including a quality chance from Tani Oluwaseyi that was denied by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco also suffered an early setback when midfielder Ismael Saibari exited with an apparent hamstring injury.
Despite Canada's strong start, Morocco broke through in the 50th minute. Azzedine Ounahi curled a free kick into the bottom corner to give his team a 1-0 lead. Canada continued to press for an equalizer but was unable to capitalize on its chances.
Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute, finishing off a well-executed counterattack to double Morocco's advantage. Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal in stoppage time to seal the victory.
The win continues Morocco's remarkable run on the international stage after reaching the World Cup semifinals in 2022. The Atlas Lions will next face the winner of France and Paraguay in the quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium.
Canada's tournament comes to an end despite an energetic performance in front of its supporters and several opportunities that ultimately went unfinished.
