Cuba hit by nationwide blackout amid ongoing energy crisis
Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout Monday as the country continues to struggle with a worsening energy crisis.
Cuba’s Ministry of Energy said the national electrical grid suffered a total collapse, while officials began working to restore power and activated emergency systems to support essential services.
The island has experienced repeated nationwide blackouts in recent years as its aging electrical infrastructure struggles to meet demand.
Cuba’s energy problems have intensified amid fuel shortages and increased pressure from the United States. Cuban officials say restrictions on fuel shipments have contributed to the crisis, while U.S. officials say economic measures are intended to pressure the Cuban government to make political and economic changes.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel criticized the United States, accusing Washington of attempting to create instability through economic pressure.
The ongoing energy crisis has affected critical services, including transportation, education, and medical care, while also impacting tourism and the broader Cuban economy.
The two countries have continued diplomatic discussions in recent months, even as tensions remain over issues including trade, foreign investment, and regional security.
Officials say efforts are underway to restore electricity across the island. CNN Newsource reports the situation remains developing.
