Trump Says He Urged FIFA to Review Balogun Red Card Before Suspension Was Lifted
President Donald Trump said Monday that he personally urged Gianni Infantino to review the red card suspension issued to U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun.
Speaking at the White House, Trump confirmed he contacted the FIFA president before the organization reversed its decision, allowing Balogun to play in the United States' match against Belgium.
Balogun had initially been suspended after receiving a red card during the team's previous match. FIFA's decision to overturn the suspension generated significant debate across the soccer world.
Trump defended the striker, saying he believed the play did not warrant a foul or red card. He described the incident as two players colliding at full speed rather than an intentional infraction.
The president also praised Infantino as "highly respected" and said he believes the FIFA president understands the game well.
With the suspension lifted, Balogun was cleared to take the field for the United States in its match against Belgium.
