Gear It Forward Helps Coachella Valley Kids Get in the Game

A local nonprofit is making sure the cost of sports doesn't keep Coachella Valley children on the sidelines.

Gear It Forward, founded by Yvonne and Gracie, helps young athletes by covering registration fees, providing sports equipment and connecting families with coaching opportunities.

The idea was born after Yvonne donated her son's baseball gear and realized many families struggle to afford the expenses that come with youth sports.

Founders say the mission is personal. They hope every child has the opportunity to experience the confidence, friendships and life lessons that come from playing sports.

Parents say the program has been a game changer, while coaches say having the proper equipment helps young athletes feel prepared and confident while building teamwork and leadership skills.

The nonprofit is accepting donations of gently used sports equipment. Items can be dropped off at the Sluggers Training Facility in Indio or at additional donation locations listed on the organization's website.

Looking ahead, Gear It Forward hopes to open a community center that will provide even more opportunities and resources for local youth and their families.
