Power Slowly Restored After Nationwide Blackout in Cuba
Power is gradually being restored across Cuba after the nation's electrical grid suffered a complete collapse, triggering another widespread blackout for millions of residents.
Cuban officials say electricity has been restored to some essential services, including hospitals and food production facilities, but much of the country remained without power after the outage. By late Monday, only a small portion of Havana had electricity as crews worked to stabilize the system.
The blackout comes as Cuba continues to struggle with severe shortages of fuel, medicine and electricity. Officials have not yet determined what caused the grid failure, but the island has experienced recurring outages due to aging infrastructure and limited fuel supplies.
According to Cuban authorities, this marks the eighth nationwide blackout since October 2025 and the third major grid collapse this year. Many residents were already experiencing prolonged power outages before the nationwide failure occurred.
The energy crisis has intensified after the Trump administration halted fuel shipments from Venezuela and Mexico earlier this year and warned of tariffs on countries that continue supplying oil to Cuba. U.S. officials say the sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Cuba's government, while Cuban leaders argue the restrictions have worsened the humanitarian situation.
As restoration efforts continue, millions of Cubans remain affected by ongoing power shortages that have disrupted daily life across the island.
