Beating the Heat: Sun and Bug Protection Tips from Clark's Nutrition
NBC Palm Springs anchor Thalia Hayden headed to Clark's Nutrition in Rancho Mirage this week to talk sun safety and bug protection with the store's Starkie Sowers, and she came back with some easy ways to enjoy the season without paying for it later.
Sunscreen That Actually Works
Gone are the days of baking in the sun until you burn. These days, protection comes first, and you don't have to deal with a thick, white residue to get it. Clear formula sunscreens are now widely available for both your face and body, so you can get full coverage without looking chalky. When you're picking an SPF, aim for at least 30, though many experts point to 50 as the sweet spot for full protection.
Soothing a Sunburn
If you do end up with a sunburn, aloe is your best friend. It works well as an everyday after sun treatment too, so it's worth keeping on hand even on days you didn't burn. For something more concentrated, look for an aloe based gel, and consider pairing it with a calming essential oil to help soothe your skin and take the sting out of the day.
Keeping the Bugs Away
Mosquitoes love the valley just as much as we do, and some of the smallest types can be the hardest to spot. If you've got guests coming over, try lighting mosquito repelling sticks in your yard about an hour before everyone arrives. Sprays are another good option for extra coverage.
If You Do Get Bit
For bug bites, there are effective, non cortisone treatments that calm the itch and irritation without the downsides of steroid creams, and they can last several hours at a time.
