Kentucky Governor Requests Health Update on Senator Mitch McConnell
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has requested an update on Senator Mitch McConnell’s health and well-being as questions continue about the longtime senator’s condition.
Beshear sent a letter Wednesday to McConnell’s office, citing an increase in public questions his administration has received regarding the senator’s health status.
McConnell, 84, was reportedly admitted to the hospital on June 14, and only limited information has been released about his condition or prognosis.
In the letter, Beshear said allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to McConnell or Kentucky residents. He expressed hope that the senator would be able to provide information directly to the public while wishing him a safe and speedy recovery.
However, a former McConnell staff member who is now a political commentator told NBC’s Louisville affiliate that he spoke with the senator Monday for about 20 minutes about several topics.
McConnell’s office also said he spoke with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senator John Barrasso on Monday.
McConnell is not seeking reelection this November, meaning his Senate seat will be open and contested in the upcoming election.
