Palm Springs City Council Approves New Palm Tree Trimming Policy
The Palm Springs City Council has approved a new policy governing the trimming of city-owned California fan palms, balancing public safety with historic preservation.
Under the new policy, natural palm tree skirts will be removed from many city-owned palms in an effort to improve safety in public spaces. City officials say the change is intended to reduce potential fire hazards, improve visibility and enhance pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas.
The policy includes several exemptions to preserve the city's unique desert character. Palm tree skirts will remain intact at historic sites, culturally significant landscapes and select park areas where they are considered an important part of Palm Springs' heritage.
Council members also authorized the city manager to identify additional palms that may retain their natural skirts if city staff determine they can be safely maintained.
The new guidelines aim to create a consistent approach to palm tree maintenance while protecting the iconic appearance that has become synonymous with Palm Springs.
City officials say the policy reflects a balance between maintaining public safety and preserving the historic and cultural significance of the city's distinctive California fan palms.
