Rattlesnake Season Returns to the Coachella Valley: How to Stay Safe on the Trail

Rattlesnake season is underway in the Coachella Valley, and experts are reminding hikers to stay alert while enjoying the desert outdoors.

Maria Noble Valdez spoke with the Friends of the Desert Mountains to learn more about rattlesnake behavior, habits, and how people can stay safe during an encounter.

Experts say rattlesnake season lasts longer than many people realize, typically running from April through October. During the spring, snakes may be active throughout the day as temperatures remain cooler. During the hotter summer months, they are more commonly seen around dawn, dusk, and nighttime.

Rattlesnakes are also experts at blending into their surroundings and may not always rattle when someone approaches.

One of the biggest safety tips for hikers is to stay aware of what is happening around them.

“We don’t recommend hiking with headphones on,” said a Friends of the Desert Mountains representative. “That’s one of the things that you definitely can get caught off guard with.”

Hikers are also encouraged to watch several feet ahead on the trail rather than only focusing on where they are stepping.

If you encounter a rattlesnake, experts say the best thing to do is stop, give the snake plenty of space, slowly back away, and either change directions or wait for it to move along.

For those hiking with pets, experts recommend keeping animals on a short leash and preventing them from digging into holes where snakes may be hiding.

Experts also helped clear up a few common myths: baby rattlesnakes are not more venomous than adults, and rattlesnakes do not chase people. If a snake moves toward someone, it may simply be trying to reach its shelter or destination.

Staying aware and giving these desert reptiles their space can help keep both hikers and wildlife safe.
