Three Injured During Running of the Bulls at Spain’s San Fermín Festival
The annual San Fermín Festival is taking place this week in Pamplona, Spain, featuring one of the world’s most recognizable and dangerous traditions: the Running of the Bulls.
During Wednesday’s event, 11 bulls charged through the narrow, cobblestone streets as a crowd of participants waited for the opportunity to run alongside them.
The tradition dates back many years, when local youths began running with cattle as they were moved through the city to be sold or used for bullfights. The practice later became part of the San Fermín Festival, which honors Saint Fermín, the city’s first bishop.
While the event draws thousands of participants and spectators each year, officials warn of the risks involved. Three people were injured during Wednesday’s run, including one person who was taken to the hospital after being gored.
The weeklong festival features daily bull runs through the city, along with celebrations that bring visitors from around the world to experience the centuries-old tradition
