California Lifeguards Warn of Hazardous Surf and Launch Free Life Jacket Stations
State lifeguards in Carmel-by-the-Sea are warning beachgoers to use caution as hazardous surf conditions, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents, are expected along the California coast.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings about dangerous coastal conditions, and lifeguards are reminding visitors that ocean conditions can change quickly.
Lifeguards are advising people to stay away from rocks, keep a close eye on children, and never turn their backs on the ocean.
Officials recommend visiting beaches with staffed lifeguard stations, where visitors can get safety information and guidance about local conditions.
Tourists unfamiliar with the area’s waters can be especially vulnerable. One visitor from Canada said he watches warning flags and pays attention to wave conditions before entering the water.
Lifeguards also announced plans to add free life jacket stations at beaches including Carmel River Beach and Asilomar.
The stations will allow visitors to borrow life jackets for themselves and their children while spending time at the beach.
Officials say the safest choice is to stay out of the water when conditions are unclear, follow posted warnings, and speak with lifeguards for advice before entering the ocean.
