Cathedral City Senior Center Relief Fund Helps Seniors Through Short-Term Crises

For many local seniors, a little extra help can make all the difference.

Every Monday morning, hundreds of residents visit the Cathedral City Senior Center for its weekly food distribution. Staff and volunteers say demand continues to grow as more people face financial challenges.

"This economy is creating more people who are in our food line who've never been in a food line before," organizers said.

Helping meet that growing need are twin sisters Laura and Karen, who recently launched a new community relief fund designed to connect seniors and other residents with critical resources beyond food. The program offers assistance with housing, health care and other services for people experiencing short-term hardships.

"The goal of this project is to meet the needs of people who are in a short-term crisis," the sisters said.

Inspired by their mother, Laura and Karen say they hope to provide more than financial assistance—they want to offer hope and encouragement to neighbors facing difficult times.

"More people need help. I think once the word gets out, it'll be a gift that we can do as a whole community here to help neighbors helping neighbors," they said.

Staff at the Cathedral City Senior Center say the relief fund is about more than providing meals. By helping people before their situations become more severe, they hope to preserve dignity while giving residents the support they need to get back on their feet.
