Desert Safety Seminar Offers Summer Hiking Tips for Coachella Valley Residents
With summer temperatures climbing across the Coachella Valley, local experts are encouraging residents to take extra precautions before heading outdoors.
During a desert survival and safety seminar, experts emphasized that preparation is one of the most important steps hikers can take. They recommend planning your route ahead of time, carrying a downloaded or paper map, bringing extra food and water, packing a first aid kit, and letting someone know where you're going and when you expect to return.
Wildlife is another important consideration. Experts warned that rattlesnakes may not always provide the familiar warning rattle before striking. Recent research suggests some rattlesnakes are adapting by rattling less frequently, making it even more important for hikers to stay alert on local trails.
Medical professionals with Desert Care Network say anyone bitten by a snake should seek immediate medical attention, even if they are unsure whether the snake was venomous. Doctors note that smaller rattlesnakes can be difficult to identify, and emergency physicians can monitor patients and perform testing to ensure there are no serious complications.
Desert Care Network also encourages community members to learn emergency response skills through its Stop the Bleed program, which provides hands-on training for treating traumatic injuries before first responders arrive.
