Extreme Rainfall Is Becoming More Common Across the U.S.

Heavy rainfall and dangerous flooding are becoming more frequent across parts of the United States, and experts say climate change is playing a role in the increase of extreme weather events.

Following widespread flooding in the Northeast after the July 4th weekend, millions of people remain at risk as additional thunderstorms threaten parts of the country.

Dr. Kerry Cook, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, studies how climate change is impacting rainfall patterns. She says a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, giving storms more fuel and leading to heavier downpours over shorter periods of time.

“What we’re seeing is the places that are already prone to flooding are receiving more flooding events,” Cook said.

She says improving emergency communication and warning systems is critical, especially in communities where residents may only have a short amount of time to react before dangerous flooding develops.

Cook points to alerts from the National Weather Service, emergency notifications, and warning systems such as sirens as important tools to help protect residents.

As extreme weather events continue, experts say communities need to focus on preparation, including stronger warning systems and public awareness about flood risks.
