McConnell Health Concerns Spark Calls For Transparency
Nearly a month after Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted to a Washington, D.C. hospital following a medical emergency, questions continue to surround his condition.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s office says it directly contacted McConnell’s team, asking for more transparency about the senator’s health and his ability to serve constituents.
During a visit to downtown Lexington, Kentucky residents shared concerns about the limited information available.
One University of Kentucky senior said public officials who make major decisions should be transparent with voters about their health.
McConnell’s team released a statement last week saying the senator “continues to improve” and is working with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.
Some residents questioned whether McConnell should remain in office, while others said the decision should ultimately be left to voters.
If McConnell’s Senate seat were to become vacant, Kentucky law requires Governor Andy Beshear to call a special election. A notice would then have to be sent to sheriffs across all Kentucky counties at least 63 days before Election Day.
The winner of that special election would serve the remainder of the current Senate term.
