Palm Springs Power to Host Free Family Literacy Night

Baseball and books are coming together this weekend to help local children stay engaged in reading throughout the summer.

The Palm Springs Power, the Read With Me volunteer program and the Riverside County Office of Education are hosting a free Family Literacy Night on Saturday at Palm Springs Power Stadium.

Children ages 12 and under will receive free admission to the game, along with free books and educational activities designed to make reading fun outside the classroom.

Organizers say the event is aimed at preventing the "summer slide," a decline in reading skills that can occur when students are away from school for an extended period. By encouraging children to continue reading during summer break, they hope to help students return to school ready for success.

In addition to literacy activities, families can enjoy a screen-free evening at the ballpark while cheering on the Palm Springs Power.

Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Organizers encourage families to attend for an evening that combines education, entertainment and America's favorite pastime while helping young readers build lifelong literacy skills.
