Parasitic Stomach Illness Sickens Hundreds Across the Country
A severe stomach illness caused by a parasite is sickening hundreds of people across the country, with cases now reported in more than 30 states.
The illness, known as cyclosporiasis, is caused by the parasite Cyclospora, which infects the intestines and can lead to watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, bloating and fatigue.
Health officials say the outbreak has primarily been linked to contaminated produce, but the parasite can also spread through contaminated water, including swimming pools and splash pads.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been at least 843 confirmed cases and more than 1,500 possible cases reported in 31 states, with 86 people hospitalized.
Experts warn that unlike many stomach bugs that clear up within a day or two, symptoms from cyclosporiasis can last for weeks or even months and may come and go over time.
Symptoms include:
- Explosive or watery diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal cramping
- Bloating
- Fatigue
To help reduce the risk of infection, health officials recommend thoroughly washing fresh produce, especially items such as lettuce, basil, cilantro and raspberries.
Cooking fruits and vegetables can also help reduce risk, though experts note the parasite is particularly hardy and difficult to eliminate completely.
Officials also warn that Cyclospora is resistant to chlorine, meaning it can survive in properly treated swimming pools and splash pads. During an outbreak, residents may want to avoid public swimming areas if advised by local health authorities.
