FIFA Considering Expanding Future World Cup to 64 Teams

FIFA is considering expanding the men's World Cup to 64 teams after the success of this year's first-ever 48-team tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the idea will be reviewed by the organization's committees after the World Cup concludes, saying the goal is to give more nations an opportunity to compete on soccer's biggest stage.

Infantino said expanding the field would allow more countries to dream of qualifying while recognizing the improving quality of teams from around the world.

The proposal has already been supported by South American soccer's governing body, CONMEBOL, which has suggested a 64-team tournament for the 2030 World Cup. That event will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to mark the tournament's 100th anniversary.

Supporters say a larger tournament would increase global participation and create more opportunities for emerging soccer nations. This year's expanded 48-team format produced memorable runs by first-time participants and underdog teams.

Critics, however, argue that adding more teams would further lengthen an already expanded 104-match schedule and place additional demands on players, many of whom return to their club teams shortly after the tournament ends.

No decision has been made, and FIFA says discussions on a possible 64-team World Cup are still in the early stages.
