Officials Urge Coachella Valley Residents to Prepare for Possible Monsoon Impacts

Monsoonal moisture is moving into the Coachella Valley this week, bringing increased humidity, cloud cover and the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.

While forecasts continue to evolve, emergency officials say now is the time for residents to review their emergency preparedness plans and make sure they are ready if storms develop.

Areas such as Vista Chino Road near the Palm Springs and Cathedral City border are known to experience flooding during heavy rainfall events and have been temporarily closed during previous storms.

Officials say even a small amount of rain can create significant problems in the desert due to dry soil conditions and poor drainage.

The Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network recommends residents prepare emergency supplies ahead of time, including:

  • - Drinking water

  • - Prescription medications

  • - Nonperishable food

  • - Supplies for pets

  • - Flashlights and batteries

  • Safety experts also encourage residents to secure their homes by clearing gutters and drains and placing sandbags in areas vulnerable to flooding.

Vehicle preparation is equally important.

Local mechanics say drivers should inspect:

  • - Tire condition and tread depth

  • - Windshield wipers

  • - Headlights and taillights

  • - Battery health

Mechanics also warn that hidden potholes and flooded roadways can cause serious suspension damage or even lead to engine failure if water enters a vehicle's air intake system.

Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roadways, as water depth and road conditions can be difficult to judge and can quickly become dangerous.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and stay informed as conditions develop throughout the week.
