Palm Springs Shelter Confirms Six Dogs Lost in Northern California Investigation

The Palm Springs Animal Shelter has confirmed that six dogs connected to its facility were among the animals found dead as part of an expanding investigation in Northern California.

The dogs are among at least 117 animals discovered dead at Miranda's Rescue in Humboldt County.

Investigators searching the property late last month uncovered canine remains, skulls and hundreds of bones. Authorities say evidence suggests many of the animals may have been killed by gunfire.

The Palm Springs shelter had transferred 35 animals to Miranda's Rescue beginning in 2024 under the belief that the dogs would be placed in permanent homes.

Officials had previously confirmed the deaths of two dogs connected to the shelter. However, four additional animals were recently identified through microchip records, bringing the total to six.

In a statement, the shelter said: "Mabel, Creek, Fergus and Eclair were healthy, behaviorally sound dogs who we believed had every opportunity to find loving homes."

Shelter officials also said Miranda's Rescue had previously reported that at least two of the dogs, Mabel and Fergus, had been adopted and had provided updates that appeared to support those claims.

The Palm Springs Animal Shelter says it is fully cooperating with investigators as the case continues.

The investigation remains active and authorities in Humboldt County say additional findings are possible as evidence continues to be processed.
