Rubio vows to dismantle International Criminal Court in expanded Trump administration campaign
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the Trump administration is launching an expanded effort to dismantle the International Criminal Court, calling on other countries to reject the court's authority over the United States and its allies.
Rubio accused the ICC of using international law to target the United States and said the administration would use "all the tools" at its disposal to weaken the court, including possible sanctions, visa restrictions and diplomatic pressure.
According to the State Department, senior U.S. officials are urging countries that belong to the ICC to withdraw their membership and end financial support for the court. Officials also warned that nations receiving U.S. assistance while continuing to recognize the ICC could face increased scrutiny.
The Trump administration has opposed the ICC since President Donald Trump's first term, particularly over investigations involving U.S. military personnel and Israel. The latest campaign marks a significant escalation in that effort.
Critics, including the advocacy group Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), argue the administration is undermining the international rules-based order. The International Criminal Court had not publicly responded to Rubio's latest comments at the time of publication.
