Thousands Sick in Multi-State Parasite Outbreak as Investigators Search for Source
Health officials are investigating a widespread outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora, which has sickened more than 3,000 people across 31 states. The parasite is commonly linked to contaminated fresh produce, but investigators have not yet identified the specific food responsible. Michigan has reported the highest number of cases, with nearly 2,000 confirmed infections. Experts stress that people should continue eating fruits and vegetables while taking precautions by thoroughly washing, peeling, and cooking produce whenever possible. Meanwhile, New York City is also responding to a separate outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, a serious bacterial pneumonia associated with contaminated water systems. Health officials say antibiotics are effective treatments for both illnesses, and they encourage anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical care and get tested.
