New video shows moments before fatal ICE shooting in Maine
New surveillance video has surfaced showing the moments surrounding a fatal shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Biddeford, Maine.
The footage shows a white vehicle slowly driving in circles as ICE agents on foot appear to attempt to stop the car and open the driver's door. The video then shows agents surrounding the vehicle after an officer fired a shot that killed a 26-year-old man from Colombia.
Two immigrant advocacy organizations, Presente! and the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition, identified the victim as a Colombian national who was authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number. His name has not been released at the request of his family.
NBC News also reports that, according to the office of Maine Sen. Angus King, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told the senator the man who was killed was not the individual named in the arrest warrant agents were attempting to serve.
In a statement, ICE said agents were conducting targeted surveillance at the last known address of a person with a final order of removal when another person left the residence in a vehicle. The agency said officers attempted a vehicle stop, but the driver tried to flee, prompting an officer to fire his weapon out of concern for public safety.
ICE has not identified the victim publicly or stated whether he was the subject of the surveillance operation. The shooting remains under investigation.
