1 Dead, 3 Missing After Boat Sinks Near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

One person is dead and three others remain missing after a 50-foot cabin cruiser sank Tuesday afternoon near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay.

The San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to reports of a vessel in distress between Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge around 3:30 p.m.

Officials said the boat, identified as the Volare, was carrying 20 adults when it began taking on water in rough seas before overturning. Initial reports indicated the vessel may have been on fire, but responding crews found no evidence of flames.

A police marine unit rescued one man from the water in critical condition and began CPR before transporting him to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Thirteen people were safely rescued, while three others were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, primarily sustained while jumping into the water.

Three people remain missing, and rescue crews continued searching Tuesday evening using multiple boats and other resources.

Fire officials said many of those on board were family members believed to be participating in a memorial gathering.

The cause of the sinking remains under investigation. Authorities have established a family reunification center at Fort Mason and are asking anyone seeking information about loved ones who may have been aboard to contact the American Red Cross.
