Coachella Planning Commission Recommends Permanent Ban on New Data Centers

The Coachella Planning Commission has approved a proposal to permanently ban new data center projects citywide.
The recommendation comes after the Coachella City Council previously extended its temporary moratorium on new data center developments for 10 months and 15 days, giving officials additional time to evaluate potential impacts.
Opponents of new data centers have raised concerns about the facilities' significant demands for electricity and water, along with possible effects on nearby neighborhoods, including noise and air quality concerns.
Supporters of the proposed ban say the move would allow the city to protect community resources and carefully consider future development priorities.
With the Planning Commission's approval, the proposed ordinance will now advance to the Coachella City Council, where it is expected to receive its first reading during the August 12 meeting.
The City Council will ultimately decide whether to adopt the permanent ban on new data center projects within city limits.
