Cyclosporiasis cases rise nationwide as health officials warn about stomach bug
Cases of a parasitic stomach illness known as cyclosporiasis are rising across the country, prompting health officials to remind people about symptoms and prevention.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by a parasite that affects the gastrointestinal tract and can lead to watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fevers.
The CDC reports more than 1,600 confirmed cases, 141 hospitalizations, and infections in 34 states. While California has reported cases, Riverside County currently has no confirmed infections.
Health officials say they are still investigating the source of the outbreak, but contaminated fresh produce has been a common link in previous cases.
Experts say there is no need to avoid fruits and vegetables, but people should thoroughly wash produce under clean, running water before eating — even items labeled prewashed.
While cyclosporiasis is rarely life-threatening, severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Health officials are reminding people in the Coachella Valley to stay hydrated and practice safe food handling.
