Experts warn sports betting accessibility can fuel gambling addiction
As sports betting becomes easier to access through smartphones and online platforms, experts are warning about the growing risk of gambling addiction.
With the FIFA World Cup generating billions in betting activity, specialists say gambling addictions can affect anyone, including younger people.
Jade Maldonado, who previously struggled with casino gambling addiction, said the pull was not only about losing money — it was the feeling and escape that kept drawing her back.
Experts say gambling addiction can be especially difficult to overcome because it activates two different reward systems in the brain, making recovery more challenging than many other addictions.
Addiction specialist Jessica Steinman says sports betting can be particularly triggering because it is closely tied to watching games and following teams. She encourages loved ones to be mindful around major sporting events and avoid encouraging conversations about scores or bets with someone struggling with gambling.
Experts say not all gambling addictions involve casinos or lottery tickets. Online betting and sports wagering are increasingly common forms of the addiction, making awareness and support more important than ever.
