Search continues for three missing after boat capsizes near Alcatraz
Marine rescue teams are still searching the San Francisco Bay this morning for three people missing after a boat capsized near Alcatraz Island Tuesday afternoon.
The 50-foot cabin cruiser was carrying 20 adults and a dog when it went down. Authorities say one man died and the dog did not survive. Three people were hospitalized after falling into the water, and 13 people were not hurt.
"They were hit by a wave or took on water and the boat capsized," said Fire Chief Dean Crispen.
Investigators say the boat had launched from the St. Francis Yacht Club. The group was reportedly holding a memorial service on board at the time. "Our understanding is there was some kind of memorial service that they were engaging in, and that's why they were using this particular vessel," one official said.
The incident was first called in as a fire, though investigators say there's no evidence yet of a blaze on board. What caused the boat to capsize is still under investigation.
Video from the scene shows the boat's cabin still above water before it fully sank, with debris floating to the surface. One witness described the chaos of pulling people from the bay. "As soon as people were hitting the water we were trying to pick them up as fast as we can. Some people didn't even have life vests on," the witness said.
The Coast Guard, along with the Oakland Police Department, is helping with the search. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie called it "an all hands on deck search and hopefully rescue."
The names of those killed, hospitalized, or still missing have not been released.
