Vance says backlash over false Michelle Obama insult was “disproportionate”
Vice President JD Vance said the backlash over a UFC fighter’s false and offensive comment about former first lady Michelle Obama was “totally disproportionate.”
During an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Vance discussed the incident involving fighter Josh Hokit, who made the remark while thanking President Donald Trump after a victory at a White House-hosted UFC event.
Vance said he was more surprised by the reaction than the comment itself, arguing that people in politics and public life often say controversial things.
Joe Rogan pushed back, saying the comment was inappropriate given the setting at the White House. Vance agreed it was not the best place for the remark but maintained that the public response was excessive.
Hokit’s comment drew criticism from both opponents and some Trump supporters. UFC CEO Dana White called the statement “nasty and false” and dismissed it as inappropriate.
The White House did not directly address the comment, instead praising Hokit’s performance in the fight.
Vance also discussed broader reactions to controversial jokes, saying public outrage over humor has become harmful to the country.
