At Least 6 Killed, More Than 100 Wounded in Russian Strike on Ukrainian Shopping Center

At least six people have been killed and more than 100 wounded after Russian drones struck a shopping center in central Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities said Friday.

The attack happened in Kryvyi Rih, where Ukrainian officials said drones struck the shopping center in two waves. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the second strike came about 30 minutes after the initial attack and targeted emergency responders who had arrived to deal with the resulting fire.

Video geolocated by CNN shows a drone striking the shopping center, sending a fireball into the air while smoke from an earlier strike remains visible.

Other footage from the scene showed smoke filling the shopping center as people rushed to escape. Stores inside the building caught fire, according to Oleksandr Vilkul, head of Kryvyi Rih's city defense council.

Vilkul said 103 people were wounded. At least 27 of those injured were in serious condition, including a 14-year-old girl who suffered a traumatic brain injury and two other children.

Ukrainian officials described the attack as a "double-tap" strike, referring to the use of a second attack after an initial strike to target people responding to the first attack.

Russia has intensified its aerial attacks on Ukraine in recent months as fighting along the frontlines remains largely static. The continued strikes have also placed additional pressure on Ukraine's air defense systems.

The latest attack comes amid ongoing efforts to end the war, which has continued despite the largely stalled frontline.
