Marc Stad Buying Controlling Stake in Timberwolves, Lynx for $4.5 Billion

Tech investor Marc Stad is acquiring a controlling stake in the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx in a deal that values the franchises at $4.5 billion.

Stad, founder and managing partner of Dragoneer Investment Group, was already a minority investor in the teams under the ownership group led by Marc Lore and former baseball star Alex Rodriguez. He is now purchasing the majority of Lore’s stake.

The ownership change comes just over a year after Lore and Rodriguez completed their purchase of the franchises from longtime owner Glen Taylor. That deal was valued at $1.5 billion and followed a multiyear process before receiving NBA approval in 2025. The new $4.5 billion valuation represents a substantial increase.

Rodriguez is expected to remain involved with the teams and will continue as governor of the Lynx. Stad's wife, Elisa Stad, is expected to serve as the Timberwolves' governor, subject to league approval. Lore will retain a minority ownership position.

In a joint statement, Stad, Rodriguez and Lore said they remain committed to building the Timberwolves and Lynx into successful organizations both on and off the court.

The ownership change comes as both franchises look toward continued success. The Timberwolves have made three consecutive deep playoff runs, while the Lynx are competing for another WNBA championship.

The ownership group has also expressed interest in eventually building a new arena for the teams.

The transaction is the latest major sale involving a professional basketball franchise. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Lakers were sold in a deal valued at a record $12.5 billion.

The Timberwolves and Lynx transaction still requires approval from the NBA Board of Governors before it can be finalized.
