Mother’s Day Spending Expected to Top $34 Billion in 2025, Says National Retail Federation
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Americans are preparing to spend big. According to the National Retail Federation, total spending for the holiday is expected to exceed $34 billion, with individuals planning to spend an average of $259—a slight increase from last year.
“Consumers spend on average for Mother’s Day more than any other holiday except the winter holidays,” said Katherine Cullen, Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights for the NRF.
Cullen emphasized that many shoppers are looking to show appreciation not only for their mothers, but also for other mother figures in their lives.
The NRF’s latest survey highlights the most popular Mother’s Day gifts for 2025:
Flowers
Greeting cards
Outings like brunch or dinner
Clothing
Jewelry
“There are lots of ways consumers can save and also ways they can create a meaningful memory with mom through a gift of experience,” Cullen noted.
Some of those budget-friendly experience-based gifts include a picnic, movie night at home, or a homemade craft. Cullen adds that the most important thing is spending quality time together: “The key is spending time together and something that’s a little different for her.”
Retailers are also beginning to roll out sales in advance of the holiday to help shoppers stay within budget.

A high-speed police chase in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, came to a dramatic end when the vehicle plunged into Lake Como.
