Apple delivered better-than-expected results in its latest quarter, driven by strong iPhone sales and a rebound in China. However, looming tariffs could pose a significant financial challenge in the months ahead.

For the quarter ending in June, Apple reported $44.5 billion in iPhone revenue, up from $39.3 billion a year ago and surpassing analyst estimates. Overall revenue reached $94 billion, a 10% year-over-year increase. Sales in China climbed to $15.3 billion from $14.7 billion in the same quarter of 2024.

CEO Tim Cook said on a call with analysts that the company faces a potential $1.1 billion tariff hit in the September quarter, up from $800 million last quarter, as President Donald Trump’s trade policies continue to reshape global supply chains. While Apple has shifted most iPhone production for the U.S. market from China to India, the company still faces the threat of additional tariffs.

Despite the positive earnings, Apple stock is down nearly 15% for the year and lags behind tech rivals like Microsoft and Meta, whose AI advancements have driven stronger investor confidence.

Cook defended Apple’s focus on the iPhone’s role in a changing technology landscape. “It’s difficult to see a world where iPhone’s not living in it,” he said, emphasizing that devices and AI tools will work together rather than replace each other.

Apple’s AI development has been slower compared to competitors, with a major Siri upgrade delayed until next year. Cook said the company is investing heavily in AI, including hiring, reallocating staff, and acquiring seven companies this year, some in the AI sector.

While investors welcomed the strong iPhone results, they continue to press for a clearer AI strategy as Apple works to remain competitive in an evolving tech market.
