Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery to Over 1,000 Cities
Amazon has launched an expanded grocery delivery service that allows customers to purchase perishable food items alongside regular merchandise in a single online checkout, targeting more than 1,000 cities across the United States.
The service enables customers to add dairy products, meat, and seafood to their standard Amazon shopping carts for same-day delivery. Previously, Amazon's partnerships with local grocery stores required customers to complete separate transactions through different checkout systems.
Service Integration and Pricing
The new offering operates alongside Amazon's existing grocery delivery options, including Amazon Fresh, which provides faster delivery times with higher minimum order requirements, and Whole Foods Market delivery.
Prime members receive free same-day delivery on orders exceeding $25, with a $2.99 fee applied to smaller orders. Customers without Prime subscriptions can access the service for $12.99 per order with no minimum purchase requirement.
Expansion Timeline
Amazon plans to extend the service to 2,300 cities by the end of 2025, with additional markets scheduled for 2026. The rollout represents the company's effort to consolidate its grocery delivery operations and compete more directly with traditional grocery retailers and delivery services.
The integrated checkout system addresses a previous friction point where customers had to navigate multiple purchasing platforms when buying both grocery and non-grocery items from Amazon's various retail partnerships.
