U.S. Job Market Shows Signs of Cooling as Openings Drop Below Expectations
The U.S. labor market weakened more than anticipated in July, with new government data revealing a sharper decline in job availability than economists had predicted.
Job openings fell to 7.18 million at the end of July, representing a decrease of approximately 180,000 positions from June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released Wednesday.
The decline exceeded forecasts from economists surveyed by FactSet, who had expected only a modest drop in available positions between June and July.
The current level of job openings marks the lowest point since September of the previous year, signaling a continued softening in what had been a historically tight labor market.
