Financial Stress Driving Parents to Talk Money with Kids as Gen Alpha Influences Spending
High gas prices, inflation, and rising interest rates are not just straining household budgets—they’re also changing how families talk about money.
Financial conversations that were once considered off-limits are now happening at the dinner table. According to a recent survey from Intuit, 81 percent of U.S. parents say current financial pressures have made them realize the importance of teaching their kids about money. Nearly 80 percent say they are more transparent with their children than their own parents were, and 71 percent want their kids to avoid the financial mistakes they made.
Experts say these lessons are often rooted in everyday situations. Something as simple as a trip to the grocery store can become a teaching moment about needs versus wants, helping kids better understand budgeting and decision-making.
At the same time, a new generation is already shaping how money is spent at home. Known as Generation Alpha, this group includes children from toddlers to teens—and they’re influencing billions in household spending.
According to insights from PwC, Gen Alpha has grown up in a digital-first world where online shopping is second nature. Many learned how to browse and add items to a cart before they could even walk.
That shift is transforming family dynamics. Online shopping carts are becoming a new form of communication within households—where kids express what they want, negotiate with parents, and sometimes even make purchases independently.
As financial pressures continue, experts say these open conversations and early exposure to money management could help shape a more financially aware generation.
