Consumer Sentiment Hits Record Low in April Amid Rising Fears Over Iran Conflict
ANN ARBOR, MI — Americans are feeling more pessimistic about the economy than at any point in the last 74 years. The University of Michigan’s final consumer sentiment reading for April 2026 clocked in at 49.8—the lowest level on records dating back to 1952—as families struggle with the financial fallout of the escalating US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
While the final figure was a slight improvement over the preliminary report issued earlier this month, the data highlights a "lousy" economic mood across the country. Sentiment is now hovering just below the depths reached in June 2022, when post-pandemic inflation previously hit a four-decade high. Joanne Hsu, director of the university’s Surveys of Consumers, noted that a modest recovery occurred only after a two-week ceasefire was announced, which allowed gas prices to soften briefly.
Despite that small reprieve, the underlying data remains grim. About half of the consumers surveyed spontaneously reported that high prices are actively eroding their standard of living. Personal finance ratings dropped by 9% in April alone, reflecting growing anxiety over household budgets as the cost of basic goods continues to climb at a pace not seen in years.
Inflation expectations for the year ahead have also taken a sharp turn for the worse. Consumers now expect inflation to reach 4.7% over the next 12 months, up significantly from the 3.8% projected in March. This represents the largest one-month jump in inflation expectations since April 2025, a month characterized by market volatility following President Trump’s announcement of sweeping international tariffs.
The combination of geopolitical instability and a persistent high cost of living has left many Americans in a state of financial paralysis. With uncertainty surrounding the durability of the current ceasefire and its long-term impact on global energy markets, experts warn that consumer confidence is unlikely to see a significant recovery until there is a clear resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.
