In the tech sector, Alphabet (GOOGL) shares rallied 10% after the Google parent reported profit that nearly doubled analyst estimates, driven by what CEO Sundar Pichai described as artificial intelligence "lighting up every part of the business."
The record-breaking session occurred against a backdrop of complex economic data. While U.S. GDP grew at a 2% annualized pace in the first quarter—slightly below some economists' estimates—jobless claims fell to their lowest level since 1969, signaling a labor market that remains incredibly tight despite recent headlines of corporate belt-tightening.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East provided early volatility as Brent crude oil prices briefly crossed $126 a barrel overnight due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. However, prices reversed course during the session to settle near $114, providing a sense of relief that helped calm broader markets into the closing bell.
As the markets look toward May, after-hours attention is already shifting to Apple, which released strong earnings just after the close. For now, Wall Street is taking a victory lap on a historic April performance that confirms the "AI buildout" remains the defining economic story of 2026.
