Reclaiming the True History of Thanksgiving: The Wampanoag Perspective

Indigenous scholars and leaders are challenging the traditional narrative of Thanksgiving, shedding light on the complex history of the holiday and the experience of the Wampanoag people. While Thanksgiving is often remembered as a peaceful feast between pilgrims and Native Americans, experts like Chris Newell and Melissa Costa highlight that the event was not an invitation but rather an unplanned visit by Wampanoag leader Massasoit. This initial encounter and its portrayal oversimplify the true history, overshadowing the darker legacy of European colonization, including forced assimilation and the decimation of Native populations. Today, the Wampanoag people, known as the "people of the first light," commemorate Thanksgiving as a Day of Mourning, encouraging reflection beyond the popular myths. For those interested in understanding the full history, Costa urges people to learn more and see Thanksgiving through a broader lens, emphasizing the importance of cultural awareness and respect.
