Food banks across Southern California and the nation are grappling with the dual challenges of soaring food prices and dwindling donations, even as millions of Americans continue to face food insecurity. Mary Bell Gonzalez reports that food pantries, especially during the holidays, are seeing unprecedented demand. Chris Merrill, a local resident, shared that lines at his food pantry have grown from 50 people to nearly 700. "I’ve never seen a line this long before," he said. The issue is widespread. Feeding America estimated that in 2023, over 50 million people relied on food assistance. Their survey revealed that from August 2023 to August 2024, 85% of food banks experienced either sustained or increased demand, despite falling unemployment rates. Adding to the challenge, high food prices and declining donations strain food banks' ability to meet growing needs. "For those who are food insecure, this help is a lifeline," Gonzalez explains, emphasizing the critical role food banks play during difficult times. With conditions not improving, many are calling for increased community support to address this ongoing crisis and ensure families can gather around the dinner table this holiday season.
