Hawaii Volcano Erupts, USGS Issues Warning as Lava Spews from Summit Caldera

A volcanic eruption in Hawaii has captured attention as lava began spewing from the summit caldera of Kīlauea early Monday morning. The eruption was first spotted at 2:30 AM local time by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, prompting the US Geological Survey (USGS) to raise its volcano alert level from advisory to warning. The eruption is currently confined to the summit caldera of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. However, the eruption is releasing significant amounts of volcanic gases, including carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, which are hazardous to those downwind. The USGS has warned of the potential risks posed by these gases as the eruption progresses. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, reassessing the hazards as the eruption evolves.
