Seniors, Health Care Workers Rally Against Proposed Medicaid Cuts Outside Calvert's Office
Dozens of concerned seniors, healthcare workers, and patients gathered today outside Congressman Ken Calvert’s office in Palm Desert to oppose proposed cuts to Medicaid. The rally was part of a broader series of protests across California, as local communities express alarm over the potential consequences of reducing Medicaid funding.
Protesters argue that Medicaid cuts would severely impact the most vulnerable populations, particularly seniors, low-income families, and individuals with chronic conditions. One rally participant emphasized, “I don’t want to see my neighbors suffer. I don’t want to see people overcrowding the emergency room because they don’t have regular health insurance.”
The group also pointed out that relying on emergency rooms for primary care is both inefficient and costly. “It’s not only bad for the person who has to go to the emergency room, but it’s also more expensive for the system,” said one healthcare worker. “Going to an emergency room every time you get sick is not health coverage—it’s a crisis.”
Participants at the rally stressed that cuts to Medicaid would worsen the already strained healthcare system, creating more overcrowded hospitals and driving up the cost of care for everyone. “We need people to be healthy and able to access the care they need when they need it,” one local senior stated. “If you take away that access, the whole system breaks down.”
The Palm Desert rally was one of many taking place across the state, as Californians urge their representatives to reconsider any proposed reductions to Medicaid.
