With vegetation destroyed, officials are concerned about flooding and mudslides, prompting National Guard crews to dig trenches and prepare for the worst. Southern California is under a flood watch, with experts warning that the fire-scarred land is highly prone to erosion and runoff. The Palisades and Eaton Fires were among the most destructive, leaving communities vulnerable to secondary disasters. Many homeowners are now at risk of flood damage, which is not typically covered by standard insurance policies.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
