Boxer Chris Van Heerden Hopes for Partner Karelina’s Release from Russian Custody
Following the release of American teacher Marc Fogel, professional boxer Chris Van Heerden remains hopeful that the Trump administration can broker a similar deal to secure the freedom of his partner, Karelina, an American ballerina. Karelina, who holds dual U.S. and Russian citizenship, was arrested on January 2, 2024, during a visit to her 90-year-old grandmother. The Russian authorities charged her with treason after they discovered a $52 donation she had made to support Ukrainian efforts.
This seemingly small act has led to grave consequences for Karelina, who now faces the possibility of a life sentence in Russian prison. Her arrest has drawn attention from the U.S. government and the international community, with many rallying for her release. In the wake of Marc Fogel's recent freedom, Van Heerden and Karelina’s family feel a renewed sense of hope that diplomatic efforts might succeed in bringing her home.
Van Heerden expressed his optimism, stating that the release of Fogel, an American teacher who had been detained in Russia for years, shows that negotiations are possible. "If Marc can come home, then surely Karelina can too," he said. As the situation continues to unfold, Karelina's family is holding onto the belief that the U.S. government can help secure her release, just as they did for Fogel.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
