CSUSB Palm Desert Alumna Introduces Former President Joe Biden at Chuckwalla Monument Dedication
Rhian Reyes, a recent graduate from the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, had the unique honor of introducing former President Joe Biden at the official dedication of the Chuckwalla National Monument in Washington, D.C. The event, which took place at the White House, was a pivotal moment in the campaign to protect over 624,000 acres of land in Southern California’s desert region. This land holds immense ecological, cultural, and historical significance, and its new designation is part of a national effort to safeguard public lands for future generations.
Reyes, originally from the Coachella Valley and currently residing in Indio, works as a campaign organizer with Audubon California, where her role involves outreach and education efforts focused on conservation. Her deep involvement in the Chuckwalla National Monument campaign, which began in September 2023, made her a natural choice to speak at the momentous event.
“I’ve been involved in the campaign from its early stages, and seeing it officially recognized was surreal,” Reyes reflected. “Being asked to introduce President Biden was an incredible honor. It’s something I never imagined when I was a student here at CSUSB Palm Desert.”
The dedication ceremony was attended by various stakeholders, including tribal representatives, environmental advocates, and government officials, all of whom emphasized the importance of collaboration in preserving America’s natural heritage. In her introduction, Reyes passionately highlighted the significance of the Chuckwalla National Monument and its potential to inspire future generations to care for the land.
For Reyes, the moment was both professionally fulfilling and deeply personal. “It was a full-circle moment,” she said. “I had the privilege of introducing Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz at the monument’s campaign launch, and to then have the opportunity to introduce President Biden was the culmination of all the hard work and dedication I put into this cause.”
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Reyes has a personal connection to the desert landscape. She shared that, as a young person, she didn’t appreciate the beauty of the Coachella Valley, but after experiencing life in Seattle, she returned home with a newfound respect for its unique features. Now, she enjoys hiking in the Chuckwalla National Monument, often with her pug, and hopes that the monument’s designation will raise awareness about the region’s natural wonders.
Reyes credits her education at CSUSB Palm Desert with providing her with the skills necessary for her role in conservation and advocacy. Her time as secretary of the History Club and editor for the university’s publication “History in the Making” helped her develop communication and public speaking abilities that have been crucial for her professional success.
As an alumna, Reyes encourages current and future students to take full advantage of opportunities available to them. “Networking and saying yes to new experiences can open doors you never expected,” she advised. “For me, an internship with the Protect California Deserts Coalition led directly to the opportunity to speak at the White House. You never know where the journey will take you, so take every chance to grow, learn, and connect.”
Through her hard work, passion for conservation, and dedication to her community, Rhian Reyes exemplifies the power of education and commitment in achieving extraordinary professional milestones.
