Southern California Solar Companies Rally to Save Federal Tax Incentives
In a unified effort to safeguard the solar industry’s future, solar companies from across Southern California gathered Thursday morning to meet with Congressman Ken Calvert’s team. The discussion centered on the critical federal tax credit for residential solar installations and concerns over its potential elimination.
Homeowners who install solar panels currently benefit from a 30% federal tax credit, a key incentive that has spurred growth in the renewable energy sector. Representatives from Riverside County and the broader Southland stressed that removing this credit could cripple the industry and negatively impact local economies.
Scott, a solar industry advocate, spoke with Caitlyn Kelly of NBC Palm Springs, highlighting the urgency of the situation. "With many decisions being made in Congress right now, we wanted to advocate for these credits on behalf of our customers, their constituents, and the solar industry as a whole," he stated.
The meeting comes amid recent changes in utility regulations, such as net metering 3.0, which reduced compensation for solar energy sent back to the grid, extending the payback period for solar investments. Combined with the threat of losing federal incentives, industry leaders warn that the solar sector could face severe setbacks.
In 2023, California’s solar industry employed over 80,000 workers. However, job numbers dropped by 22% following utility policy changes, underscoring the industry's fragility. Many of Congressman Calvert’s constituents work within the solar sector, and advocates hope he will carry their message to Washington.
The coalition of solar companies hopes this show of solidarity will prompt Congress to recognize the importance of these tax credits for both the local and national economies. As the renewable energy landscape continues to evolve, maintaining these incentives is crucial to sustaining industry growth and environmental progress.

A high-speed police chase in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, came to a dramatic end when the vehicle plunged into Lake Como.
