Trump Hints at Possible Third Term, Floats Workarounds as Musk Sparks Election Controversy
In a provocative series of remarks, President Trump is not ruling out a possible third term, despite the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms.
In an exclusive phone interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump said there are “methods for doing so” and claimed “a lot of people want me to do it.” When asked to clarify whether he was joking, he replied, “I’m not joking,” but added that “it’s far too early to think about it.”
One possibility floated during the conversation: Vice President J.D. Vance running for president and passing the baton back to Trump after winning. Trump responded, “That’s one, but there are others, too.”
Later, aboard Air Force One, Trump avoided specifics: “I don’t want to talk about a third term now, because no matter how you look at it, we’ve got a long time to go.”
The president also used the interview to express anger over international affairs, threatening additional tariffs on Russian oil following criticism from President Vladimir Putin over Trump’s dealings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
With his recently announced 25% tariffs on all foreign-made cars, Trump told NBC News, “I couldn’t care less” if automakers pass those costs onto consumers. Wall Street is now bracing for volatility as new reciprocal tariffs take effect Wednesday, just ahead of “Liberation Day” on April 2 — a date Trump has repeatedly referenced.
Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a vocal Trump ally, is drawing fire for his role in Wisconsin politics. Amid nationwide protests at Tesla dealerships, Musk held a town hall in Wisconsin ahead of the state’s critical Supreme Court election. He’s being accused of trying to buy influence, reportedly offering million-dollar checks to voters who sign a petition against so-called “activist judges.”
“This is one of those things that may not seem like it’s going to affect the destiny of humanity,” Musk said at the event. “But I think it will.”

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
